Driving in Cyprus: Car Rental and Road Safety Basics

20 October 2026

A rental car can open up more of Cyprus, from bays beyond your resort to inland villages and viewpoints. Before collecting the keys, take time to understand the road rules and exactly what your rental agreement covers.

In Cyprus, you drive on the left

Traffic moves on the left side of the road. Keep this in mind when entering roundabouts, turning at intersections or leaving an unfamiliar car park. Do not assume that navigation directions will remind you about lane placement. Take extra care after a long flight.

What to check before paying

  • Licence and driver eligibility: confirm your licence is accepted and whether age or experience restrictions apply.
  • Deposit and payment card: check the security hold, card requirements and whether a debit card is accepted.
  • Insurance and excess: understand damage excess, excluded areas and optional cover before signing.
  • Fuel policy: confirm whether the car must be returned with the same fuel level.
  • Child seats: reserve appropriate child restraints in advance.
  • Pickup and return: verify the location, opening times and out-of-hours fees.
  • Road restrictions: follow the rental company’s limits for unpaved roads and areas outside its permitted coverage.

At the collection desk

Photograph the car’s exterior and interior, including wheels, glass, the fuel gauge and any existing marks. Record these on the inspection form. Check lights, seatbelts, tyres and the location of any emergency equipment. Ask how to contact the rental provider if you experience a breakdown or collision.

On the road

Seatbelts are required, and children need suitable restraints. Respect posted speed limits; do not rely on generalized limits in older online articles. On winding rural roads, leave more time and avoid driving when tired. Give pedestrians, cyclists and motorcycles room and keep a safe following distance.

When a transfer may be better

If your holiday mainly involves one coastal resort and a few organized excursions, a private transfer or local transport may suit you better than a rental car parked for most of the week. Compare the total cost, not only a daily rental rate.

Official safety resources

The official Cyprus tourism health and safety guidance explains key driving precautions. Check the current rules and your rental agreement before travelling.

This is general travel guidance rather than legal advice. The rental company and relevant Cypriot authorities are the final sources for licensing and road regulations.
